The Mobile Health for Youth and Families Institute (The Institute) is a non-profit (IRS 501(c)(3) status is pending) dedicated to collaborating with youth and families, behavioral health providers, and juvenile justice personnel to help sustain the positive behavioral changes gained through various interventions. To accomplish this The Institute provides research and development of innovative applications of mobile technologies, and provides those services in a secure, reliable and cost-effective manner.

The Institute’s initial product and service provides supportive text messages to youth transitioning from mental health or substance abuse facilities into the community. This service will be expanded to support other providers (e.g., Employee Assistance Programs, Primary Care, Youth Development organizations) and other technologies (e.g., iMessage, Google Message, iPad administration). The Institute serves as an incubator for other mobile-based solutions serving similar clienteles.

Breach Notification Tool

The Breach Notification Tool on the HHS website (also known as “the Wall of Shame”) lists all privacy breaches reported to the HHS Office of Civil Rights that affect 500 or more individuals.

The page lists each breach and provides:

  • Name of the covered entity;
  • State;
  • Number of individuals affected;
  • Date of breach;
  • Type of breach (e.g., theft, loss, unauthorized access, etc.); and
  • Location of breached info (e.g., laptop, network server, paper, other portable electronic device).

The listings are available online and can be downloaded as CSV or XML format for further analysis. These listings can be very informative to Privacy Officers, Security Officers and any others who are responsible for or concerned about maintaining patient privacy. For example, unauthorized access to paper is surprisingly common. Are we focusing so much on digital technologies that we have forgotten what we once knew about keeping paper records secure? Did we include printers and copiers in our HIPAA risk analysis?
